Interior Designer

Reports To: Director of Interior Design

Department: Interior Design | Architecture
Schedule: Full – Time
Location: Southern California residents are preferred for occasional in-person client and team collaboration. Hybrid arrangements are welcomed, and remote candidates will be considered for the right fit.

Note: We are currently hiring TWO Interior Designers to fill this role

About the Role

We’re looking for an Interior Designer who enjoys both the creative and the technical side of design.

In this role, you’ll help shape spaces from early concept through construction — translating ideas into thoughtful environments that are not only inspiring, but practical and buildable.

You’ll work closely with architects, consultants, vendors, and project teams to bring interiors to life across a range of environments. Some days that might mean refining a gallery layout, developing custom millwork, or coordinating materials and lighting that support the story a space is meant to tell.

We’re looking for someone who can think creatively, stay organized, and take ownership of their work while collaborating closely with the rest of the team.
Proficiency in Revit (required)

What You’ll Do

  • Develop interior design concepts that align with the client’s vision, brand, and functional goals
  • Support space planning efforts and coordinate with architects on interior layouts
  • Prepare design presentations including mood boards, renderings, and material palettes
  • Select finishes, furnishings, lighting, and other interior elements
  • Produce detailed construction documentation in Revit, including:
    • Floor plans and interior elevations
    • Reflected ceiling plans
    • Finish plans and schedules
    • Millwork and interior detailing
    • FF&E specifications and furniture layouts
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, and vendors throughout the design process
  • Conduct site visits and support construction administration activities
  • Respond to RFIs and help resolve design challenges during construction
  • Maintain organized documentation and ensure the design intent is carried through installation

Projects You May Work On

Our projects span a variety of environments, and experience in any of the following areas is valuable:
Community, Worship & Cultural Spaces

  • Churches, community gathering spaces, and environments where thoughtful design supports how people gather, worship, reflect, and connect
  • Museums and cultural institutions
  • Gallery layouts, circulation planning, and artifact display coordination
  • Collaboration with exhibit designers and lighting consultants
  • Durable and conservation-appropriate material selections

Commercial Environments

  • Workplace and office interiors
  • Retail and customer-facing spaces
  • Code compliance and life-safety considerations
  • Budget-conscious material sourcing

Residential Interiors

  • Custom millwork and cabinetry
  • Kitchen and bath design
  • Client-driven personalization
  • FF&E sourcing and procurement
  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required for project meetings, site visits, and installation support. Depending on the project, this may include travel by plane to visit project sites, fabrication partners, or installations.

What You’ll Bring to the Party

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design or a related field
  • Established professional interior design experience.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating both creative design and technical documentation
  • Experience working across multiple project types (cultural, commercial, residential, etc.)
  • Confidence managing your scope within a collaborative project team
  • Knowledge of building codes, ADA requirements, and construction standards
  • Strong material specification and detailing skills
  • Proficiency in Revit (required)
  • Experience with SketchUp or other 3D modeling tools is helpful
  • Confidence in presenting ideas and communicating directly with clients

Bonus Points If You have…

  • NCIDQ certification (or working toward it)
  • Experience with project budgeting or cost estimating
  • Construction administration experience

The Kind of Designer Who Thrives Here

  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills
  • Creative, but grounded in how things actually get built
  • Comfortable shifting between different project types and design approaches
  • Sensitive to the cultural and emotional significance of the spaces we design
  • Collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented

A Note on This Role
This role is best suited for an Interior Designer who enjoys both the creative and technical sides of interior design.

You should feel comfortable taking an idea from concept through construction documentation and coordinating with the broader project team to see it implemented. While we work collaboratively, this role requires someone who can manage their scope, produce clear documentation, and help ensure design intent carries through to the built environment.

Project Architect

Reports To: Senior Architectural Project Manager & Team Lead

At Storyland, we design architecture that tells our clients’ stories. Our work blends strong architectural fundamentals with narrative thinking to create spaces that are purposeful, engaging, and meaningful.

As a Project Architect, you’ll play a critical role in shaping and delivering that work. You’ll partner closely with the architectural team to lead projects from early design through documentation and construction support — ensuring design intent, technical execution, and project outcomes stay aligned from start to finish.

This role is intended for a highly experienced architectural professional who brings strong judgment, deep technical knowledge, and confidence managing complex projects and clients.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the delivery of multiple architectural projects simultaneously, bringing structure and momentum from early design through documentation and construction support
  • Take ownership of overall project health — scope, schedule, and budget — keeping a steady pulse on progress, risks, and resourcing
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients on assigned projects, guiding conversations with clarity and confidence
  • Prepare and manage project plans, including scope definition, fee estimates, schedules, and delivery strategies
  • Coordinate closely with structural, MEP, and civil consultants, ensuring strong integration across disciplines
  • Oversee and review architectural drawings and technical documentation with an experienced eye for quality, constructability, and design intent
  • Contribute to the development and review of custom architectural details that support unique design solutions
  • Support construction phase efforts, including RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, field questions, and punch lists
  • Partner with the Team Lead and architectural team to keep communication clear, decisions documented, and work moving forward
  • Craft clear written communications with IQ and EQ as equal parts — emails, letters, and documentation — that keep teams and clients aligned on progress and direction

The Right Person for This Role

You bring meaningful experience working on architectural projects beyond the concept phase and are comfortable supporting and helping lead work through documentation and construction support. You understand how architecture is delivered and what it takes to keep projects coordinated and on track.

You’re organized, collaborative, and thoughtful in how you work. You communicate clearly with EQ, manage details well, and exercise good judgment around when to take initiative and when to ask for input or support.

You are a seasoned architectural professional who has moved well beyond pure production work. You understand how projects are truly delivered — technically, financially, and relationally — and you bring expertise, judgment, and calm to complex situations.

You communicate clearly and thoughtfully, both verbally and in writing, and are comfortable crafting emails, letters, and documentation that guide teams and clients with clarity and professionalism. You know when to take ownership, when to collaborate, and when to escalate thoughtfully.

In addition, the right person for this role brings:

  • 10+ years of professional architectural experience
  • A professional degree in Architecture from an accredited program
  • Architectural licensure required
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple architectural projects concurrently
  • High-level experience coordinating structural, MEP, and civil consultants
  • Proven ability to successfully manage scope, schedule, and budget
  • Seasoned experience reviewing and interpreting architectural drawings and technical documentation
  • Experience developing custom architectural details to support unique design intent
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • A collaborative working style grounded in emotional intelligence and respect

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Revit and BIM-based workflows
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Expert-level ability to review, interpret, and guide architectural drawings and technical documentation
  • Familiarity with project scheduling and coordination tools

What Success Will Look Like

For day-to-day success, you will…

  • Exhibit flexibility, kindness, and a willingness to learn
  • Build strong working relationships through follow-through and clear communication
  • Deliver architectural projects that are well-coordinated, clearly communicated, and aligned with design intent
  • Maintain a clear, accurate view of project health, including scope, schedule, budget, and risks
  • Build trust with clients through steady leadership and clear communication
  • Coordinate complex consultant teams so work integrates smoothly
  • Provide thoughtful architectural oversight without micromanaging production
  • Communicate project progress and direction clearly in meetings and in writing
  • Anticipate issues early and address them collaboratively and proactively
  • Support strong financial discipline across projects, with no surprises

  • You’ll use construction modeling software like AutoCAD, Revit, and others to create schematics
  • You’ll demonstrate an ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, with the confidence to multi-task and delegate as required
  • You’ll visit architectural work sites and take measurements of structures and spaces if necessary
  • You take ownership of the full drawing set, ensuring coordination, accuracy, and readiness for each phase of delivery
  • You confidently interpret and apply building codes, contributing to well-resolved and compliant design solutions
  • You support construction administration efforts, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and assisting with field coordination as needed
