SITUATION

Orange County Rescue Mission (OCRM) is a nonprofit in Southern California devoted to helping individuals and families overcome homelessness and rebuild stable, purposeful lives. On its campus, built on the former site of Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, OCRM provides far more than shelter. Residents receive education, life skills training, and job readiness support. Over the years OCRM had steadily expanded its reach, adding veterans housing and youth enrichment programs to serve all ages with particular care.

Over time, OCRM began to recognize that the once-utilitarian barracks they occupied did their job well but carried little of the warmth, dignity, or the hope at the heart of their work. Yet the simplicity of the barracks offered something rare: a blank canvas waiting to be transformed for hope and renewal.

OCRM sought an authentic brand identity that could unite the campus visually with the boldness of its mission. Together, we began envisioning environments that would not only serve practical needs but also embody restoration. The goal was simple yet powerful: create spaces that instill dignity, awaken hope, and make visible the transformation unfolding in the lives of those who call OCRM home.

SOLUTION

Through the lens of OCRM’s mission, Storyland refined their brand identity and visual language to more deeply reflect purpose, dignity, and transformation. OCRM’s logo was intentionally redesigned so each element specifically represents a different pillar of their mission.

On campus, we updated the environment to support OCRM’s restorative mission. Restoration Cafe was redesigned to create a welcoming and meaning-filled place for residents. Large‑format graphics and art elevated exterior facades and brought intentional beauty to once‑plain spaces.

Collaborative workshops with OCRM staff informed the design direction of the Wonder Kids and adjacent Hope Academy spaces – conceptualized children’s areas where imagination and future possibilities are nurtured. With playful storytelling and licensed creative elements generously gifted from Play-Doh, the spaces will strongly embody the idea of “Shaping Possibilities.” These layered visuals support programs from early childhood to junior high, and extend into multi‑use and adult education spaces.

TRANSFORMATION

OCRM’s upcoming spaces and freshly expressed brand help to communicate their mission visually and experientially. The campus now reflects the dignity and potential the organization pursues in each individual, while interior graphics and exterior facades reinforce the mission’s message that every person has worth and potential.

Spaces like Restoration Cafe and Wonder Kids bring joy and aspiration into residents’ daily lives. The visual language we built supports OCRM’s long‑term programs, which are structured to help people build life skills, complete education, and transition into stable housing and employment.

Leadership affirms that the redesigned spaces and brand expression amplify their mission—helping people feel valued, supported, and hopeful as they progress to confidence and independence.
