SITUATION
Refreshing a Kids Ministry for the Next Generation
For years, families arriving at Saddleback’s kids ministry were welcomed by an iconic live aquarium. It was a standout feature at their Lake Forest campus, a genuine highlight that created an immediate sense of wonder in kids.
But over time, maintaining a live aquarium required increasing effort and resources. Saddleback’s leadership began exploring how the space could become even more engaging for children growing up in an ever-digital world.
Rather than removing the aquarium altogether, the team saw an opportunity to expand the original concept while reducing long-term maintenance and costs. They looked to preserve the excitement families associated with the space by producing a more personally connective moment for kids.
SOLUTION
An Interactive Aquarium Where Kids Become Creators
PlainJoe partnered with Saddleback Kids Ministry to reimagine the beloved aquarium into The Reef, an interactive underwater environment built around creativity and play.
Instead of simply watching fish swim by, kids now create and release their own into a shared digital ocean. At touchscreen kiosks, children first design a fish by choosing its species, colors, and personality. Once released, their fish swims alongside others in a living underwater ecosystem through multiple connected displays around the lobby.
PlainJoe’s interactive team custom built the experience utilizing real-time 3D animation and synchronized displays, allowing kids to follow their fish as it interacts and explores.
Beyond the digital, the physical space was reworked to support story. Layered lighting, fabricated rock work, ambient ocean soundscapes, and synchronized effects help the digital aquarium feel fully integrated and create a calm welcome into the kids ministry.
The Reef was designed as a flexible system. Over time Saddleback can update content, introduce new elements, and layer in curriculum and storytelling that align with their values and teaching goals.
TRANSFORMATION
From Observation to Participation
The biggest change wasn’t just visual. It was behavioral. The Reef transformed the lobby experience from something kids passed by into something they help create. The space now invites curiosity, imagination, and ownership, giving children an immediate sense that they belong. Parents see their kids light up right away as they run excitedly into kids ministry.
What was once a static feature is now a dynamic environment that can evolve week after week while preserving the heart of what families loved about the original aquarium.
More than an update, The Reef demonstrates how interactive storytelling can transform a familiar feature into a meaningful shared experience designed to grow alongside the ministry to remain relevant for years to come.
